GEOLOGIE BRITANNIA EN

panorama

The view from Klein Allalin to the west is spectacular! Those mountains are also very interesting from a geological point of view. The peaks of Strahlhorn – Rimpfischhorn – Allalinhorn – Egginger and Mittaghorn are composed of serpentinites, gabbros and basalts, rocks that formed the oceanic crust of the Thetys Ocean some 150 to 170 million years ago. During the formation of the Alps, the rocks visible in this landscape were first buried to a depth of 80-100 km as one tectonic plate passed beneath another. During this “subduction”, temperature and pressure transformed them into metamorphic rocks. They were then uplifted to their present altitude. An incredible story!
